US Grand Prix

Sunday, November 25th, 2012

Okay, departing from the normal posts of cute babies and beautiful families, I thought I’d take a moment to share one of my other loves. I’ve been a fan of Formula 1 racing for years and have been lucky enough to attend several races over the years. The Formula 1 circuit has been absent from the United States since 2008, but returned last weekend to a brand new circuit in Austin, Tx. The Circuit of the America’s is a beautiful facility and was completed just days before the race. While they still have a lot to do to make the circuit more fan friendly, they put on a good race and the city of Austin welcomed the circus of Formula 1 with open arms and big smiles. The F1 season just wrapped up in Brazil and Sebastian Vettel just won his 3rd championship, so I’ll start out with a photo of the 2012 F1 Champion.

Lewis Hamiton, driving his second to last race for Vodaphone McLaren-Mercedes won the inaugural race at the Circuit of the America’s (CotA).

7-time world champion Michael Schumacher pilots his Mercedes through turn 5 at CotA during practice for the USGP.

Kimi Raikkonen uses the curbs in turn 4 at CotA during practice for the USGP.

2012 world champion runner up Fernando Alonso

Red Bull’s Mark Webber

Ferrari’s Filipe Massa drives through the turn 4-5 complex at the CotA.

Rising F1 star Sergio Perez

Sebastian Vettel leads Heikki Kovalainen through turn 4 during practice for the USGP.

Was also thrilled that they had a Historic Grand Prix last weekend and was able to see some classic F1 cars that I grew-up with, in the form of toys that my father bought me when he went to races featuring these cars.

Camp Rockmont

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

21 years ago I accompanied some friends to work at a summer camp in Black Mountain, NC after graduating high school.  I fell in love with the camp, their philosophy and the people associated with it. I returned each summer during my college career to work as a cabin counselor. That camp was Camp Rockmont,  a Christian Camp for Boys, and I knew it would forever be a special place to me. A place where young boys learn about God, life and how to become upstanding young men. I dreamed of returning there someday with my own sons (extra little happy dance when I learned we were having boys each time!). Well that dream became reality last spring when the camp hosted their first father/son camp weekend. Ryan was just old enough, so he and I packed up and went for the weekend, and he loved it. Fast forward to this summer and we signed Ryan up for the 1 week starter camp and I re-signed as a staff member once again. This time my job was to shoot images for the camp to use in promotional pieces. Of course I had to grab some shots of Ryan through the week. Here are a few favorites from the week. I have so many more from this incredible week, but don’t want to show the close-ups of the campers (other than my own) here on my site. You’ll have to head over to the Camp Rockmont site or catch the directors at a home showing during their tour this fall to see more images from this incredible, life changing  place.

Getting the campers lined up for the camp wide photo, and Ryan spots me. One happy camper!

I was so proud of him for going down the Gully Washer, the camp’s huge water slide, on his own decision!

Here is another view of the Gully Washer. There is still another whole section that goes up into the trees to the start of the slide.

The older campers prepare to head into the woods for council and devotion.

Water front fun!

Ryan and his serious canoe face.

Some of the images the camp wanted that week were from their adventure trips, including  kayaking, water skiing and rafting.  Here, kayaking  trip leader Andrew gives instructions to campers before entering some rapids on the Tuckaseegee River.

Rockmont Kayaking instructor Chip Rouse attacks the rapids on the Tuckaseegee River.

Rough day at the office for me.

Water skiing at Lake James

Camp Director Dan Davis leads staff and campers in song during a camp wide gathering of song and devotions. These songfests are so full of energy and one of my favorite memories of camp.

Ryan heads back to his cabin on the back of Conner, one of his counselors.

During a long exposure, clouds pass in front of the moon as seen from Camp Rockmont’s Inspiration Point.

Thanks for letting me share some of my summer memories with you. After this, we’ll get back to business! Next up will be images from an amazing session with Hayley, rising high school senior and member of the class of 2013. Stay tuned!

Merry Christmas

Saturday, December 24th, 2011

I would like to extend a heartfelt Merry Christmas to everyone out there this year.  2011 has been a wonderful year for myself & J. Davis Photography. I have been blessed with the best clients, weather you were new to me this year, or have been around for a while. So many of you have become more than clients, you are friends and family. To be such a part of your lives, from weddings to the birth of your children, I am truly honored to be there with you.  I’m looking forward to 2012 and welcoming so many more sweet newborn lives into the world, and watching past babies grow into vibrant little kids.

From the J. Davis Photography family,

Jason, Marcia Ryan, and Cooper, we wish everyone a safe, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Ryan & Cooper: 2011

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

Here is a long over due post. I can’t even recall when I had my boys on the blog last but I know the family has been giving me grief over it. So here they are, growing up way to fast. Ryan is loving life in second grade and Cooper is looking forward (as am I) to starting Kindergarten this time next year. This mini session with the boys was prompted by the need of a portrait of Ryan for a school project, and my desire to test out a new canvas background I recently acquired. It looks great and Ryan got his portrait and we have some update images of the boys. Hope you enjoy them as much as we do!

And yes, all the beautiful portraits come with a price. Can’t tell you how many of “these” images I come away with from a session. Gotta love ’em.

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Well, I had hoped to have a big blog post with lots of fabulous fall family and kid portraits here today, but alas I’ve run out of time before the holiday weekend. However, if you were waiting on your proofs, all sessions are now done and online. And being Thanksgiving, I have to give thanks to all my clients who allow me to do something I truly love doing. I am so grateful to all of you who have given me the opportunity to share special moments in your lives and preserve them for years to come. I’m also thankful for the fact that this business has allowed me to also be a stay-home-dad to my two boys. It is these two guys, and my incredible and supportive wife, Marcia, that I thank God for each and everyday.  I hope you all have wonderful memories with your families this Thanksgiving, and happy, safe travels. I promise I will get to all those recent and wonderful sessions soon so you can see what has been going on around here. In the meantime, here is a quick shot of my two boys!
